WEEK 5 : SEJAHTERA AS LOCAL CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Assalamulaikum wbt everyone,
If you still remember, last week we had two sessions which consisted of a recorded lecture and a sharing session with the RCE exhibition at ICC, well similarly for today's class, we are going to watch a prerecorded video and join the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) to visit every booth, search for books on Sustainable Development skim read them.
Here I will share a summary from the video shared by Dr Suhaimi.
Well, Dr first let us explore the notion of Sustainable and Responsible Agency (SRA) as a local approach to sustainable development. Actually, SRA is consistent with the Madani development framework, which prioritizes sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, trust, care, and compassion. Localizing sustainable development means modifying the ideas and agenda of sustainable development to match the requirements and expectations of individual regions, countries, languages, or cultures. Dr also utilizes the example of St. Vincent and Grenadines (SVG) in localizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Next, come with to explore IIUM Book Festival 2023. Not going to lie, I was super excited and thrilled to be here, I mean, who won't be? Well, I was a little a bit confused about the venue at first since I have never been to KAED before. Upon reaching the festival, it was crowded as expected and the book talk with the tittle of Islamic Financial System was going on. If I am not mistaken, Prof DR Salina Kassim was giving out her speech as speaker of the topic. After signing the attendance sheet, I was going to search for books on Sustainable Development as instructed by Dr Suhaimi. At first, I was a bit tense as i couldn't find any related to the topic choose by the lecture but what I did found is a new friend! Keep in mind that our classes on this subject was held online so don't really know or familiar with my classmates but now, I found one and her name is Aisyah. Alright, continue with the mission of book hunting I finally found a booth with books that I was searching for. Let me list them here;
1)Spirituality and sustainability, edited by Abdul Rashid Moten
The book describes how the SDGs will offer a fresh approach to implementing the idea of Islamization, which has long served as the IIUM's cornerstone. As a result, the university's operations and infrastructure have been modified to serve as platforms for implementing and exhibiting sustainable lifestyles. According to the principles of Maqasid al-Shariah, every aspect of the institution, including the research projects, extracurricular activities, and regular office and administrative operations, is focused on sustainable development. The administration of the institution incorporates sustainability principles into all facets of instruction, research, and community involvement. As a result, the official strategic mission of the IIUM is "Humanizing Higher Education through Maqasid al-Shariah and SDGs".
Some important notes highlighted in the book is the higher education is becoming more commodified as a result of the digital revolution, which is marked by automation, globalization, and improved productivity. The goal of this market-dominant model is to legitimize the social ties of capitalist society and shape laborers for production. As senior management assumes managerial roles and enforces policies, students are taught the importance of adhering to rules and upholding social norms. Modernization and globalization have increased marginalization, inequality, and exclusion, which has led to wars, ethnic disputes, and acts of violence.
*Maqasid al-Shariah fosters human well-being and harmony in conformity with the main principles of Islamic law by fostering and sustaining the fulfilment of basic needs.
Here I attached some moments during the day!
